A Sudan Hope Initiative
In Sudan, a nexus of poverty and conflict intertwines, amplifying human suffering. As a refuge for many fleeing neighbouring nations, more than 6 million have been displaced internally. Countless others have sought safety beyond its borders. A Hope Initiative wants to help break the vicious cycle of poverty caused by this conflict by improving access to basic provisions and working on social cohesion.

The situation in Sudan has been dire since mid-April 2023, when a brutal conflict broke out between two factions of the military, which had been ruling the country since a 2019 coup. The conflict is primarily between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti). These two military leaders, once allies, became rivals after disagreements over the country’s political future, leading to violent clashes.
The fighting has led to widespread destruction, particularly in the capital, Khartoum, and other major cities. Civilians have been caught in the crossfire, and the conflict has caused severe humanitarian crises. Many people have been killed, injured, or displaced, with reports of widespread atrocities, including attacks on civilian infrastructure, homes, and healthcare facilities.
The conflict also disrupted essential services, leading to shortages of food, water, medicine, and electricity. Hospitals have been overwhelmed, and medical staff have been targeted. The fighting has also caused the displacement of over 11 million people according to the UNCH, both internally within Sudan and across borders into neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan. Refugee camps are struggling to accommodate the influx of people.

Help families in Sudan
Sudan’s unrelenting conflict has set off the world’s largest hunger crisis. More than half the population, millions of families, are now experiencing crisis levels of hunger.

Our efforts to help Sudanese refugees
There are more than 500.000 Sudanese refugees in Egypt, most of them seeking refuge from ongoing military conflicts in their home country of Sudan. Their official status as refugees is highly disputed, and they have been subject to racial discrimination, and police brutality. Since August 2024, A Hope Initiative has been actively providing support to those in need in Egypt.
What is needed
A wide range of support is needed to help the people, including education, legal assistance, and housing. However, the most crucial needs are the basic necessities—food, water, and healthcare.
Emergency relief
Our efforts in Egypt are focused on supporting those in greatest need through the distribution of food packages. To date, we have been able to provide relief to over 300 families, helping to meet their basic nutritional needs.
What’s next?
The people who have fled to Egypt are individuals who once had lives, jobs, and dreams before the war. We have taken it upon ourselves to support them as they navigate this new chapter of their lives. How can they make the best of their current situation? How can they continue their education? How can they care for their families in a foreign country? And, most importantly, how can they help others who are in similar circumstances?
We are committed to helping them find answers to these questions, providing the resources, support, and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
